Fillings: A cavity occurs when bacteria sit on your tooth and excrete acid. The acid makes the outer layer of your tooth, enamel, demineralize. The demineralization can progress to cavitation, or the formation of a small hole. As the cavity progresses, it can make your tooth soft. When a filling is done, the part of your tooth effected by the bacteria is removed. The part that was removed needs to be restored. Most commonly, a composite resin, a tooth-colored material, is used to restore the tooth.
Crowns: When teeth have a large filling or a fracture, the strength of the tooth is compromised. The crown acts as a protective helmet for the tooth to prevent damage. The tooth is re-shaped so that a crown can fit on top. There are different options of materials that can be used for the crown such as gold or ceramic. The type of material is selected depending on the needs of the patient.
Bridges: A bridge is three crowns connected together to fill in a missing tooth. The teeth on either side of the space are crowned and the space is filled in with a connected solid crown or” fake” tooth. This makes a bridge over the space where the tooth is missing.
